Everything is Obvious...Once you Know the Answer. It's been a long while since I checked in (blame my busy tutoring schedule), so today I'd like to tell a story that illustrates our teaching philosophy at McElroy Tutoring.Ten years ago, arriving at my destination of San Diego at the tail end of a cross-country drive (yes, it's been ten years already, Brian), I had zero students and a halfway decent amount of cash saved up in the bank. Although I had gained many tutoring clients during my time in Rhode Island, here in California I would have to start from scratch. In order to find new students, I would rely on my ability to self-promote, the power of the still-nascent internet, and the tutoring ability that I had honed over the previous 5 years.But first, some history:My 4 years tutoring for "Get Ready" at Harvard (1998-2002) were invaluable because they allowed me to transition directly from studying for, taking and ultimately acing the SAT on my first try, to being admitted to Harvard, to teaching the test to inner-city Boston stu dents. I didn't have any time to forget what I had learned...and as a result, as I like to tell my clients, I've been tutoring for the SAT ever since I was 18 (at this point, almost half my life)! At the time, I was looking for a public-service extracurricular, and I figured that I had built a unique skill that was no longer useful to me, so I might as well share that skill with others who wanted to acquire it. At Get Ready, we designed our own curriculum and tried the best we could with the limited time and number of students that we had. It was my first classroom teaching experience, and it was where I discovered that I had a unique talent for teaching and connecting with students from all backgrounds.At Princeton Review, where I worked after graduation, I quickly rose through the tutor ranks to become my area's most highly-requested tutor. I also spent some time working in the office and I saw how tutoring worked as a big business. I gained additional skill as an SAT tutor and classroom instructor, but I also saw a business model driven by greed rather than the student's best interest. I saw that the company preferred to sell its own workbooks and imitation practice tests, although the real tests were readily available in stores. That many of their tutors were inexperienced, recent college grads who had excellent scores but no real skill at teaching the test itself, tutors who simply read from a script and didn't adapt the lesson plan to each student's need. That they charged $120/hr and paid their tutors $18/hr. And I saw an opportunity. Why not start a test-prep company that allows tutors the freedom to teach the way they choose, with the best materials available? And that pays them 80-90% of the tutoring cost instead of 10-20%, thus attracting the best and most successful tutors?After three months in San Diego, and a bout of understandable panic regarding my dwindling savings, I finally found my first client: two brothers in La Jolla--one a student at Francis Parker and the other at La Jolla High. Before long I was tutoring them five days a week, and I started getting positive reviews and referrals. Within 2 years my schedule was completely full. Serendipitously, a good friend from Harvard arrived in San Diego and offered to take over my tutoring overflow. Suddenly, we were a real business. Not long after, we added our 3rd tutor, our 10th tutor, an office manager to take phone calls, and years later, our 50th and even 100th tutor, with expert tutors in 25 cities nationwide. Ten years later, McElroy Tutoring has hundreds of clients worldwide, and arranges thousands of tutoring sessions each year. Personally, I have continued to tutor full-time and have now amassed well over 10,000 hours of tutoring experience. Like most young, confident college grads, I thought I knew it all by the time I had been teaching the SAT for just one year. Well, I can tell you now that I was categorically wrong. In retrospect, there were plenty of skill s that I needed to improve. (Looking back at one's former self is actually quite similar to reviewing a question to which one already knows the answer!) Take the Big Blue Book full of Official SATs: I knew what all the answers *were*, and I knew how to find the answer myself, but I didn't know how to explain the question from every possible angle, for every possible type of student. That type of insight is something that only thousands of hours of tutoring can provide. I could explain why the right answer was right, but that's easy, because everything is obvious once you know the answer.Say it again: everything is obvious when you know the answer. This is the title of a great For my first few years as a tutor, I had what I called the "teachers manual": the Official SAT Study Guide with all the answers circled, and my own notes. It gave me a crutch that I could rely upon so that I would never look bad by not knowing the answer to a question or the meaning of a vocabulary word. Howeve r, I eventually realized that this crutch was making me a worse teacher. Because I already knew the answer, I was not seeing the question in the same way my students did. Like the tutors at Princeton who simply stuck to the script, I was working backwards from what I already knew to be true. I was not giving the other answers a fair shake, because I knew they were wrong. After all, these tests are just as much about why the wrong answers are wrong as they are about why the right answers are right. So I threw away the "teachers manual" and I bought myself a brand-new copy of the book, in which I wrote...nothing. No answers, no hints, nada. Now, whenever I'm tutoring, I'm looking at the same blank tests that my students are. And I'm a better tutor as a result.For the same reason, I tell all of my students to never look at the answers until they try the questions over again (and to never write down the answers next to the questions). After all, the answer always make sense when it's st aring you in the face! But if you know the answer, then the question has essentially lost its usefulness. Only once you've forgotten the answer (and how to get there) does the question become useful again, because on the real test, you're not going to know the answers in advance either. This is the same reason why you want to cover up the definition of a vocabulary word when studying vocab: if you're looking at the definition of a word, then how are you going to know whether you really knew it before you looked at it? Of course you know it *right now*--you're looking right at it, so how can you not? But it's too easy to fool yourself into thinking that you already knew that definition when you really didn't. Sure, every now and then I make a mistake or get a question wrong because I no longer have all the answers written down in front of me. But these are not perfect tests, and I am not a perfect teacher. I'm confident enough to admit my flaws and my mistakes, and I learn from them, as do my students. And in many cases, there is no objectively *right* answer anyway. There is simply the *best* answer for that particular test. Test-prep is not just about intelligence; it is about learning the nuances and tendencies of the test, what the test is looking for rather than what you might personally consider to be correct. At my age and level of experience, I'm no longer afraid to look bad in order to be a better teacher. In tests and in life, sometimes you learn more from that which you got wrong than from that which you got right. Plus, my students always have a hearty chuckle when I screw up or choose the wrong answer...I think it makes them feel better for being human too. One of my favorite things to say to my students about super-hard and/or flawed questions is "I probably would have gotten this one wrong too." Instead of pretending that the solution to every question is easy, I admit when something is harder than usual, illogical or out of the ordinary, which g ives my extra information about the tendencies of the test and allows them to prioritize their understanding of different question types. In the end, they learn much more this way than if I had simply given them a neatly canned explanation of the correct answer. In fact, this philosophy translates perfectly to life. We might give ourselves a hard time about the way things worked out, but that's because we didn't know at the time what the result would be. Of course you would not have taken that new job if you knew the company would go bankrupt 2 months later. Of course you would not have stepped onto the sidewalk if you know that you would slip and fall on the ice. Of course you would not have married someone whom you knew you were destined to divorce. Hindsight is 20/20, as they say. We must avoid the temptation to assume that every answer can be explained through logic. On the SAT, there are answers that are logically correct, and then there are answers that are "SAT correct"--ques tionable in real life but appropriate answers for this type of test, a test written by flawed human beings with an agenda, people just like us. In the same way that test-prep students must learn the tendencies of the test, a mother must learn the tendencies of childhood, a business owner must learn the tendencies of the marketplace, and musician must learn the tendencies of his fellow band mates. Simply put, a human being must learn and study the tendencies of life...even when the answers don't make logical sense.Here's to ten more years of business and beyond. Elizabeth Bishop is trying to teach this important lesson to the reader and she does this by creating a poem with an interesting structure. She increases the amount that is lost after each stanza so the reader can understand how forgetting small losses can help them get over bigger losses. She uses a rhyme scheme of ABA in each of her 3 line stanzas and each middle line of the stanzas rhyme with each other middle line of the other stanzas e.g went, continent, intent. With this, the poem flows nicely which helps the reader understand it. Also I was curious on the poem because of the title. After reading it I questioned how loss can be named an art. Bishop explains this clearly in her poem. Commentary Elizabeth Bishops poem, One Art, is a poem overflowing with irony which uses the structure and expressions to evoke the emotion of loss which Bishop is trying to convey to the reader. She seems to have lost many things in her life and has written this poem for the sole purpose to reassure the reader that if they find control within themselves, they are able to accept the many losses that are in their lives. Loss is something that cannot be mastered, emotion is always attached to loss. But Bishop is trying to tell the reader that with each loss, you endure it more and will ultimately learn to control the feeling, with less pain. The speaker in this poem seems to be Bishop dealing with her inner emotions of loss, trying to master loss so she does not have to deal with the painful emotions afterwards. This is ironic at the very concept of mastering loss, as loss is not a feeling that can be mastered. The structure of the poem is a villanelle as there are five stanzas of three lines followed by a stanza of four lines. Bishop seems to have utilised this structure to increase the readers attention and respect for loss as each stanza progresses. The tone of this poem is recognized by the reader from reading the first line. The poem deals with loss which is associated with death. A poem dealing with this theme will most certainly have a negative tone, and One Art is no exception. The tone changes with each stanza, gaining in sadness as the poem continues. This is because the value of what is lost increases within each stanza. This tone helps the reader emphasise on the value of loss. Bishop uses repetition often and refrains the line The art of losing isnt hard to master which is done to stress on the importance of the title. Also the readers sense of the subject is gained by each repetition as the theme of the poem is emphasised after each stanza. Each refrain builds up stronger amounts of loss. The second stanza is based on the loss of door keys or wasting time. The poet personifies these lost objects, saying that they seem filled with the intent to be lost. This is showing that these objects want to be lost and by giving inanimate objects feelings, it conveys that these objects are not of great importance. These are basically simple losses that one can learn to forget, but as the poem progresses, the amount that is lost builds up, including personal things with much more importance. This point can be proven in the third stanza, where she says Then practice losing farther, losing faster: This is the point in the poem, where she begins to name things that can be lost with much greater importance. Following the third stanza, the next one involves things of personal importance to a person. my mothers watchthree beloved houses. These things are more personal as a home is one which symbolises love and protection, which is a contrast to the insignificant loss of keys. In the fifth stanza, she describes the loss of things with huge importance, two rivers, a continent. Bishop continues the patter of possessions increasing in importance, by describing things which affect thousands of people. She seems to have reached things of the highest importance but finally in the last stanza, it all leads up to the most painful loss, the loss of a lover. After the fifth stanza, she uses a dash to start the last stanza. This is done to show that she is finished describing the loss of material objects, and is moving on to the loss of something with the most importance. This entire stanza flows together due to the quicker pace and full use of enjambment throughout the entire stanza. The reader was use to the punctuation increasing and pace slowing down each stanza from the first to the fifth, so this increased the impact of pace on the last stanza, making it more powerful. Parenthesis was effectively used to show how hard and painful it was for the writer to write down her emotions into words, (Write it!). Bishop is trying to teach the reader to endure the many small losses, in order to feel less pain in the loss of something with much importance. By breaking away from describing the loss of an inanimate material objects towards a living person, she amplifies the feeling of loss which conveys the message of the poem clearly to the reader. With each stanza, we further understand the emotions which Bishop is trying to convey to us. She uses the title to imply how dealing with a loss is an art in its own accord. An art is something of beauty that requires massive amounts of effort to accomplish. The use of punctuation is another distinct feature of the structure of this poem, with each stanza, the amount of punctuation increases up until the fifth stanza. Bishop increases the value of what was being lost, along with this, the punctuation increases as well. This was done to slow down the pace of the poem so that the reader understands the importance of each possession. When describing each thing that was being lost in the fourth, two cities, lovely ones.two rivers, a continent. Along with the commas, caesura was used as well in the first line to slow down the pace. By forcing the reader to stop in the middle of the line, it takes them by surprise as it was sudden, not done in the poem before. This stanza contrasts with the quicker pace of the first stanza as there was only one semi-colon and comma used. This is clear evidence of the punctuation used by Bishop which greatly emphasises what Bishop was trying to achieve with this poem. This poem was written to show the readers the comparison of loss between different things. This poem may seem simple, but is very deep mainly through the way the poet utilised the structure and the richness in irony. This can be seen by how she refrains the use of loss isnt hard to master. This changes in the last line to loss isnt too hard to master This might show how it is getting harder for the poet to overcome the loss of a loved one. Bishop proves that the loss of trivial things and mastering this loss, will not be able to prepare you for the loss of something beloved by you, which further increases the ironic nature of the poem. In the end she could be all alone, hence the title One Art. She believed that if she could detach herself from pain and forget these feelings, she can begin a new life and grow, but realises that it is too hard for her.

Siege of Veracruz in the Mexican-American War The Siege of Veracruz began on March 9 and ended on March 29, 1847, and was fought during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). With the beginning of the conflict in May 1846, American forces under Major General Zachary Taylor won quick victories at the Battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma before advancing to the fortress city of Monterrey. Attacking in September 1846, Taylor captured the city after a bloody battle. In the wake of the fighting, he angered President James K. Polk when he granted the Mexicans an eight-week armistice and allowed Monterreys defeated garrison to go free.   With Taylor at Monterrey, discussions began in Washington regarding future American strategy. It was decided that a strike directly at the Mexican capital at Mexico City would be the key to winning the war. As a 500-mile march from Monterrey over rugged terrain was deemed impractical, the decision was made to land on the coast near Veracruz and march inland. This decision made, Polk was forced to decide on a commander for the mission. A New Commander While Taylor was popular, he was an outspoken Whig who had frequently criticized Polk publicly. Polk, a Democrat, would have preferred one of his own, but lacking an appropriate candidate, selected Major General Winfield Scott who, though a Whig, posed less of a political threat.  To create Scotts invasion force, the bulk of Taylors veteran troops were ordered to the coast. Left south of Monterrey with a small army, Taylor successfully held off a much larger Mexican force at the Battle of Buena Vista in February 1847. The sitting General-in-Chief of the US Army, Scott was a more talented general than Taylor and had come to prominence during the War of 1812. In that conflict, he had proven one of the few able field commanders and earned praise for his performances at Chippawa and Lundys Lane. Scott continued to rise after the war, holding increasingly important posts and studying abroad, before being appointed general-in-chief in 1841. Organizing the Army On November 14, 1846, the US Navy captured the Mexican port of Tampico. Arriving at Lobos Island, fifty miles south of the city, on February 21, 1847, Scott found few of the 20,000 men he had been promised. Over the next several days, more men arrived and Scott came to command three divisions led by Brigadier Generals William Worth and David Twiggs, and Major General Robert Patterson. While the first two divisions were comprised of US Army regulars, Pattersons was made up of volunteer units drawn from Pennsylvania, New York, Illinois, Tennessee, and South Carolina. The armys infantry was supported by three regiments of dragoons under Colonel William Harney and multiple artillery units. By March 2, Scott had around 10,000 men and his transports began moving south protected by Commodore David Connors Home Squadron. Three days later, the lead ships arrived south of Veracruz and anchors off Anton Lizardo. Boarding the steamer Secretary on March 7, Connor and Scott reconnoitered the citys massive defenses. Armies Commanders: United States Major General Winfield Scott10,000 men Mexico Brigadier General Juan Morales3,360 men Americas First D-Day Considered the most heavily fortified city in the Western Hemisphere, Veracruz was walled and guarded by Forts Santiago and Concepcià ³n. In addition, the harbor was protected by the famed Fort San Juan de Ulà ºa which possessed 128 guns. Wishing to avoid the citys guns, Scott decided to land southeast of the city at Mocambo Bays Collado Beach. Moving into position, American forces prepared to go ashore on March 9. Covered by the guns of Connors ships, Worths men began moving towards the beach around 1:00 PM in specially designed surf boats. The only Mexican troops present were a small body of lancers which were driven off by naval gunfire. Racing ahead, Worth was the first American ashore and was quickly followed another 5,500 men. Facing no opposition, Scott landed the remainder of his army and began moving to invest the city. Investing Veracruz Sent north from the beachhead, Brigadier General Gideon Pillows brigade of Pattersons division defeated a force of Mexican cavalry at Malibrn. This severed the road to Alvarado and cut off the citys supply of fresh water. Pattersons other brigades, led by Brigadier Generals John Quitman and James Shields aided in holding off the enemy as Scotts men moved to surround Veracruz. The investment of the city was completed within three days and saw the Americans establish a line running from Playa Vergara south to Collado. Reducing the City Within the city, Brigadier General Juan Morales possessed 3,360 men as well as another 1,030 offshore at San Juan de Ulà ºa. Outnumbered, he hoped to hold the city until aid could arrive from the interior or the approaching yellow fever season began to reduce Scotts army. Though several of Scotts senior commanders wished to attempt a storming of the city, the methodical general insisted on reducing the city through siege tactics to avoid needless casualties. The next day, the Mexicans in Veracruz requested a ceasefire and asked that women and children be allowed to leave the city. This was refused by Scott who believed it to be a delaying tactic. Resuming the bombardment, the artillery fire caused several fires in the city. On the night of March 25/26, Morales called a council of war. During the meeting, his officers recommended that he surrender the city. Morales was unwilling to do so and resigned leaving General Josà © Juan Landero to assume command. On March 26, the Mexicans again requested a ceasefire and Scott sent Worth to investigate. Returning with a note, Worth stated that he believed the Mexicans were stalling and offered to lead his division against the city. Scott declined and based on the language in the note, began surrender negotiations. After three days of talks, Morales agreed to surrender the city and San Juan de Ulà ºa. Aftermath Achieving his goal, Scott only lost 13 killed and 54 wounded in capturing the city. Mexican losses are less clear and were approximately 350-400 soldiers killed, as well as 100-600 civilians. Though initially chastised in the foreign press for the inhumanity of the bombardment, Scotts achievement in capturing a heavily fortified city with minimal losses was staggering. Establishing a large base at Veracruz, Scott quickly moved to get the bulk of his army away from the coast before yellow fever season. Leaving a small garrison to hold the city, the army departed on April 8 for Jalapa and began the campaign that would ultimately capture Mexico City.

They must live in an environment where they can communicate freely with someone even if it would be just one person; but what would happen to someone who does not receive or give proper communication? In the story, The Painted Door a wife named Ann lives in a deserted country side where communication with other people is hard to come by. Her husband, John, is the only person who she has by her side on a day to day basis, yet he does not put Ann as his first priority due to his obsession with working hard to pay of his debts. Due to this she feels as though she is locked out of society and resorts to secluding her own personal feelings from anyone around her. Even though she is unable to find the love that she once had for John she is able to see that Steven is able to provide her with the many necessities that John is unable to give her. Throughout the story, Ann struggles to find the love she once had for John causing her to break her bonds with him. She begins to break her bonds through lack of attention, Seclusion of personal feelings as well as finding new love in Steven. Throughout the story Ann always talks bout how she is unable to receive the attention she desires and is simply not cared for by John. Due to her lack of social interaction within the environment she lives in she tries to seek attention from anyone. When talking to John just before he leaves for his fathers farm, Ann begs him to stay and keep her company yet he refuses to do so. â€Å"It isnt right to leave me here alone. Surely Im as important as important as your father[John] But there is nothing to be afraid of even if it does start to storm. You wont need to go near the stable.Ill be back at the latest by seven or eight†,(Ross,288). Despite Anns plea for John to stay, she is completely ignored and all of Johns attention is focused on his father. Instead of trying to comfort her he tries to change  Anns mind by telling her that she will be alright even if the storm hits and that she does not even have to go outside and do any work. This shows how John does not take into consideration how scared Ann might be during the storm . Instead he puts the job of taking care of the farm into far greater priority evidently showing how Ann receives little to no attention at all from John. As a result of this Ann get put aside so that John can take care of his father. Later on in the story, as John is getting ready to leave he tells Ann how committed he is to get to his fathers house and brings up the past where he claims that he never missed helping his father every time he needed it. â€Å"You ought to know by now I wouldnt stay behindno matter how it stormed. Twice a week before we were married I never missed and there were bad blizzards that winter to,†(289). John has made it clear that he doesnt intend on staying. He shows Ann how committed he was to visit his father whenever he could even before he was married to her. His commitment to his father is far more important to him than staying at home to keep Ann company. Now Ann is certain that Johns care for her is very little in comparison to his father. Due to Anns lack of attention from John, Ann begins to break her bonds with John. Ann believes that no one is truly there to give her the attention that she desires. John has set his eyes on helping his dad and refuses to stay no matter how much Ann begs of him. Due to this Ann tries to do the same and starts to seclude her own personal feelings from him in hopes of trying to get him to show the least bit of care for her. She does this by sarcastically telling him how all her needs have been met just as he is heading for the door. â€Å"Yes – of course – I heard youPlenty to eat – plenty of wood to keep me warm – what more could a woman ask for?†,(288). Instead of directly telling him how she feels about him leaving, Ann makes this sarcastic comment in hopes of attaining some kind of sympathy from John however John responds trying to defend his father.â€Å"But hes an old man – living there all alone. What is it, Ann, youre not like yourself this morning†,(288). Instead of getting John to care of her she causes a bit of tension between the two of them. She does the exact opposite of what she intended to do and begins to put distance between herself and John. When John finally leaves to go and help his father Ann begins to talk to herself  showing how she truly feels about John. â€Å"Thats all I need – someone to talk to. John never talks. Hes stronger – he doesnt understand†,(295). Ann begins to tell herself that all she needs is someone to talk to. Ann knows that John doesn’t need attention from anyone because â€Å"hes stronger† but Ann knows that she isnt â€Å"strong† like John is. Instead of addressing these problems directly with John she keeps these thoughts to herself. By doing this she is unable to tell John how she wishes to be treated allowing more room for John to ignore her true feelings. Through this Ann breaks her bond with John due to the shadowing of her personal feelings. Although Ann hides her personal feelings from John she is not afraid to show her true colors as soon as Steven comes over. Steven is viewed by Ann as someone who can fill the gaps that John could not. He is someone who cares for her and is willing to give her the attention she wants in order to make her happy. Later on in the story Ann begins thinking to herself how Steven may not come to visit Ann. She makes herself believe that Steven would not come because he knows that John would come home to comfort his own wife in this gruesome storm. â€Å"It would be only natural for him to think that when the storm rose John had turned again for home. Another man would- would have put his wife first†,(295). However despite the treacherous storm raging outside, Steven comes to aid Ann in her time of need. Ann is is truly captivated by Stevens determination and begins to find comfort in Steven. â€Å"At the assurance of his touch and voice the fear that had been gripping her gave way t o an hysteria of relief. Scarcely aware of herself she seized his arm and sobbed against it†,(297). Ann is so overjoyed by Stevens arrival that she begins to cry in Stevens arm. She is relieved of all the loneliness the storm had caused her and is able to find comfort in Steven, something she could never truly find in John. As Steven proceeds to do his chores Ann begins to analyze Steven more carefully. She begins to compare John and Steven in her mind. â€Å"Swiftly she was making comparisons again; his face so different to Johns, so handsome and young and clean-shaven. Swiftly, helplessly feeling imperceptible and relentless ascendancy that therby he was gaining over her, sensing sudden menace in this new, more vital life, even as she felt drawn towards it†,(Ross,298). Ann starts to accept now that she has fallen for Steven she is drawn towards this â€Å"new,  more vital life† even if she feels that it puts her and Johns relationship in danger. By making these â€Å"swift† comparisons she is quickly able to see how much greater Steven is in comparison to J ohn. Steven is able to pick up where John is unable to finish. He is able to provide to Ann the care she needs and so much more. Due to Ann immediate attraction to Steven she begins to break her bonds as she is drawn into this â€Å"new, more vital life† where she wishes to stay forever. Ann was unable to find the love and care that she had been searching for in John. She had been given no attention despite the fact that she had needed so much of it from John. She found that John had not given much of a care to her feelings and therefore had begun to hide her own feelings from John. Although John was still not able to provide Ann with the basic love and care she needed from her husband she was able to find this love and care through Steven who provided her with exactly that and much more. Through these series of events, Anns bonds with John are broken as she approaches a new life that will provide her with the necessities she had been lacking in the previous one. She no longer has to seclude her personal feelings and she can now look forward to a new spring in which everything will blossom a new. She now does not have to worry about the lack of attention she will receive from John and no longer has to worry about John making it home in time. Now she can sit with Stev en and enter into the new vital life that awaits

My character in this novel is superior, I get angry at times and I'm not afraid of violence, but yet i have unmanly emotions for Ikemefuna and Ezinma, and i will do anything to not end up like my father Unoka. Unoka and i don't get along with each other. Unoka is lazy and could care less about wut I want in life. I have been ashamed of my father since I was a little boy, because of what my clan thinks is cowardness. My emotions for Ikemufuna and Ezinma which are unmanly conflict with my manly emotions as a superior leader. My oldest son Nwoye i believe is very weak and lazy. I beat Nwoye on a daily basis hopin it will turn him into a man. Nwoye begins to develop into being more masculine influenced by Ikemefuna which pleases me. I believe Nwoye has the same weakness that my father Unoka possessed. My problem is that I am afraid of looking like my weak father Unoka. Due to his behavior it forces me to act like a fool and bring a whole lot of trouble upom myself and the rest of the poeple in my family. I was not able to change when I went to go live with the Umuofians and could not adapt to their living style. So i realized that i have become a bad person and not able change with society. Why Minors Shouldn’t Get Tattoos & Body Piercings! The more popular and mainstream tattoos and piercings become, the more teenagers want them. The problem is, it's not legal for minors to get tattoos in many states. The other problem is, most parents don't go for the idea at all. This puts teens in a position where they feel they have to make a decision for themselves, and they go seeking someone to tattoo and/or pierce them without the consent of their parents. This is where things can go terribly wrong.The fact is, any tattoo or piercing â€Å"artist† (I use that term very loosely) who is willing to break the law and disregard the wishes of parents in order to tattoo or pierce a minor is already proving they have no concern for their â€Å"client†. How can you trust someone with your health and safety who is already a criminal? Do you really want to get a tattoo by some scum with a â€Å"gun† and some ink just because he he'll do it cheap and not tell yo ur parents? If you don't want to listen to me, listen to one of your own peers. Lucky Star† is 17, and she felt compelled to share her story and explain why she has decided to wait until she is of legal age to get a tattoo. Before I begin my tale of horror I have one thing to say. Wait ‘til your 18, because it'll be so much greater if you do. That's going to be your right of passage. Trust me. I’m going to be 17 in July and its killing me that I'll have to wait just one more year to get a tat. I've been wanting tattoos since I was 10 – no joke. And I've already planned out the ones I want and where they’re going to be on my body.But I know when I'm finally able to have a professional put that beautiful piece of artwork on my body that I've craved for so long, the feeling will be so sweet. Ok enough of that on to my scary story. At the beginning of June my friend met this guy at work who said he would tattoo us at his home because he was an apprentice and he had the tools to do so at his house. I was so excited and so was my friend. So that weekend while we were driving over to his house I started thinking about all the things that have been said about tattoo artists who are willing to tattoo minors.I became torn†¦ the â€Å"should I or shouldn't I? † began a battle in my head 'til we pulled into the guy's driveway. My friend turned to me and said â€Å"are you ready? † and I was like â€Å"No, I'm not. I'm not going to go through with this. I'm just going to wait till I'm 18. † My friend then called me a baby and we went into the guy’s house. The house was disgusting and the bathroom was even worse, and that’s where the dude tattooed a hibiscus flower on my friend’s pelvic bone. I sat on the couch and cried my eyes out because I thought I blew my chance to get inked. Boy, was I wrong.After not seeing my friend for 6 days I went to her place to return some clothes I borrowed from he r. As soon as I walked into the house she grabbed me and ran to the bathroom and showed me this disgusting blob that was once her hibiscus flower tattoo. It had become infected and patchy. She ended up having to go to the hospital because the infection got really bad and she didn't want to fess up to her mom that she had gotten a tat underage in some dude's bathroom. I had to explain to her mom at the hospital about what went down. My friend is doing much better now and we've both learned a good lesson.This hasn't scared either of us from getting tattoos. It just taught us to wait till we're of legal age. Well, to all of you who are still reading I say thank you and hope that you learned something from my experience. Lucky Star's experience is just one of many where young people find themselves in a dangerous situation simply because they can't wait a few months or years to get tattooed or pierced legally. Is it really worth risking your life for? Is a piece of jewelry or a picture on your skin worth dying for? If you think it is, that is exactly why you are not mature enough to get it.
